Optifine 1.16.5 is an optimization mod released in April 2011 that allows Minecraft to run faster and have a better rendering of the game, with support for HD textures, and an addition of many graphics settings. That’s what is written on Optifine’s official website, optifine.net. But how does it really improve the rendering of the game?
I will here compare by a strict protocol four versions of Minecraft with and without Optifine, with the high graphical settings, in order to know what is the influence of Optifine on the fluidity and the load of the game, compared to Minecraft standard, called vanilla version.
The counting of FPS is done with Fraps which automatically makes me an average, a minimum, and a maximum of the FPS counted on this exact duration of 46 seconds. Each test of each graphical setting is done 4 times, and before each one of these tests, I run once the player on the circuit to generate the map beforehand (by doing directly the 4 tests, the first lap often displayed slightly more FPS). I start recording FPS with Fraps by pressing F9 when I press the button that propels the minecart of my player, and at the end of the circuit, the recording stops automatically after the time that I set to Fraps (46 seconds).
With 4 identical tests, the minimum, maximum, and average FPS are scored and the average of the 4 tests is written in a large and multi-part table. In all, it will be necessary to make a total of 4 x 6 x 4 tests (+ a warm-up lap before the 4 tests), which gives us 5 x 6 x 4 tests = 120 laps. It was not long to do.
As we can see, obviously there are a lot fewer fps when rendering chunks is high. What clearly stands out, is the difference in FPS between vanilla tests and Optifine tests. In rendering 16x, we have a fluidity with Optifine that increases more than 100 FPS on average, ie + 40% SPF.
In 32x rendering, the difference is visually even greater, we spend an average of 57 to 107 FPS, almost double! That’s 86% more FPS with Optifine compared to the standard version.
On the other hand, with a rendering of only 8 chunks, using Optifine seems to slightly reduce the fluidity of the game. But nobody plays with 1000 FPS, and Optifine is made to accelerate the rendering of the game especially when the game lag.
These observations are identical for all other versions.
Load time of 32 chunks
Now, get ready to be impressed. Really.
Do you know how long takes Minecraft to load 32 chunks (using the shortcut F3 + A, or F3 + Q for AZERTY keyboards)? Well, it takes a LOT of time! Depending on the version of the game, it can take between 2 and 4 minutes.
